LIBRARY PROFILE

The establishment of Bbalitvet Library was not explicitly stated, however there was a document on the Nineteenth Anniversary of Balai Penelitian Veteriner (1908-1998), at page 10, which pronounced Lembaga Penelitian Penyakit Hewan [the former's name of Bbalitvet organization in 1955] was equipped with a library with sufficient literature and as a reference sources on veterinary science in Indonesia. Furthermore, in Hemera Zoa, vol.65 (7-8) on the speech of commemorating the Fiftieth Anniversary of Lembaga Penelitian Penyakit Hewan, it implied the establishment of the library as follows :.

"Since the establishment of Lembaga Pusat Penyakit Hewan [the name of the institute in Bahasa Indonesia] has made efforts to collect books on veterinary science which may be beneficial to support the research activity. Up to this time, the library owned approximately 40.000 books. Most of its research publications were published in a journal issued by the Indonesian Veterinarians Association and some of them have also been published on various scientific journals overseas (Djaenoedin, 1958: 17)". "

In further development, the library has received assistance on technical librarianship and additional collection either of new books or current journal issues as depot from Bibliotheca Bogoriensis [now ICALTD]. Several international bodies have also support the library development, namely.

(1)FAO/UNDP project ATA 36 through The Directorate General of Livestock has donated to balai books and journals specifically on poultry;

(2) Agricultural Research Management Project (ARMP) is a financial body of World Bank Project in cooperation with the Indonesian Department of Agriculture, has also supported the library on journals subscription, so that the library at that moment had the most current and largest number of veterinary journals in Indonesia. Besides, the project also financed the long term training the senior library assistant in Indonesia.

(3) ATA 244 a British Project had established the library to become a Reference Library on Veterinary Science in Indonesia. As part of the process, the project had invited Miss Benita Horder, BA, MA a senior veterinary librarian of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeon in London to act as the Library Consultant in reorganizing the library. The Project also funded short library training on veterinary science in UK for the senior library assistant. The largest amount of the project assistance was purchasing important veterinary textbooks, subscribing scientific veterinary journals and filling in the gap of missing issues.

Meanwhile at almost the same time , ATA 210 an Australian Project has also backed up the library on the purpose to enhance the quality of the collection by purchasing the latest edition of basic veterinary books and subscribing veterinary journals. The project funded the long and short library trainings for two of the senior library assistants in Australia.

The nowadays development of the library collection relies on the sole financial capability of Bbalitvet as the parent organization. As one of the libraries under the scope of Agricultural Agency of Research and Development (AARD) , the library has received a long and continuous technical support from ICALTD, the institution in which responsible to coordinate the libraries under AARD. At this moment the direction of library developments are toward the application of electronic/digital system and within 5 years to come all the libraries under AARD are expected to apply the automated systems. As part of the latest progress, ICALTD had launched a resource sharing program of its subscribed electronic journals that can be accessed by all libraries under AARD.
